When two materials are rubbed together, the electrical charges change. These charges remain momentarily on the surface of the bodies (from a few seconds to several months depending on the materials and environmental conditions). They form what is known as static electricity, which is generally present in small quantities. The more insulating a body is, the more charges it accumulates.

Measurement is essential in order to quantify these charges and determine the points of generation.
